Insulation Tape or Rim Strip?

Hey Guys,

Ok, here is my story, on Firday... Yes, Firday the 13th October... I got two puntures the front wheel on one ride freaky Friday Only had one spare tube so I had to patch the other tube after it flated.

Anyway, I found out what the problem was when I got home, the rim strip is a thin piece of plastic and it keeps moving around, and it doesn't cover the spoke wholes properly, as it moves side to side. So I'm thinking of putting insulation tape over the top of the rim strip, to stop it moving, glue it down, or just buy a new rim strip (a rubber one)?

What do you guys reckon would be the best option?

Cheers,

Aaron

Get yourself a good roll of velox rim tape.

Absolutely. Velox is the most durable and reliable rim tape available.

Both work, velox is better. One piece strechable plastic rim strips are also good.

Whatever you do, definitely DON'T BUY A RUBBER ONE! Those are the worst.
Plastic is the best imho. Pick one that's so wide it only just fits into your rim. You may have a way too skinny one now.

I use Velox rim tape on all of my bikes (road). But there is a possible downside. Velox, being cotton, soaks up water and can contribute toward spoke nipple corrosion. If you get your wheels wet frequently a plastic strip may be preferable.

Velox religiously. Plastic ones crack over time.

I've got Specialized's stretchy fabric rip tapes on my two 'primary' wheels. No complaints at all and very easy to install.

On the cheap, fiberglass strapping tape works really nicely, but you have to replace it every year or so.

Velox is great though.

3m strapping tape works much better than the cheap stuff but i prefer velox because it can be removed.

performance has its own velox type tape that i have been using that seems to be as good...it may even be rebranded velox.
