Requesting Sheldon or any fixed gear guys

I have been toying with the idea of a fixie for a while now, seeing as how a lifted bronco, BMX bikes and a 9" travel DH race bike suck for getting around town.

I'm doing this with a budget of whatever a can of spraypaint is, so I basically am going to use what I have laying around and bull***** my way through it.

on sheldons site: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed-co...l#freewheelhub it mentions a fixed sprocket, does that meen a single speed freewhell made to not move? or is it something special.

And if it is something special, is there a way I can get a BMX freewheel to work, I do have access to a welder.

He's talking about using a threaded freewheel in a configuration known as a "suicide hub". Entirely different from using SS freewheels and BMX freewheels (you can't use these to make a fixed gear).

Search suicide hub and rotafix.

OK, so after searching for abit, I sort of understaned what a suicide conversion is.

My new question is, where do I get a cog with threads on it like that? what do they come on?

They're called "track cogs" (=sprockets), Obviously you'll have to buy them form a bike shop... Try your favourite webshops and ebay if you like.
You can actually use a thread-on BMX freewheel welded or filled up with JB weld, but it's not recommended at all.
"Suicide" refers to the absence of a left-threaded lockring... obviously you can only do suicide with a BMX freewheel, but if you torque it down really brutal freaking tight, it may just stay on. BTW, brutal torque is a must with any fixed setup. see: https://204.73.203.34/fisso/eng/schpignone.htm see sig for side effects

These are the same sprockets used on track hubs. The main threads are the same as on freewheel hubs.

We have them listed at: https://sheldonbrown.com/harris/fixed-sprockets.html

If you do a suicide conversion, put an old BB lockring (basically free from someone's parts bin) on TIGHT over the track cog. It's not as good as a proper reverse-threaded lockring, but will add some security by making it harder for the cog to spin off via thread compression (in the same way that it's hard to spin two nuts torqued tightly against each other).

You can get a track cog for $15-25 online. I like the Soma cogs, about $22 from Nashbar and very high-quality.
