Get by without a torque wrench?

I see that most of the parts I've been buying have torque specs with them, and I was wondering if it was important to get a torque wrench. When building my bike, my LBS will be installing the BB and headset, I'm going to give everything else a go. Since I'm new to this, and completely unaware of the tolerances of most parts, a torque wrench seems like a good idea. But I do think I've got a bit of common sense, and if that is enough, I'd be happy saving the cash (as long as I'm saving cash, and not about to destroy an expensive part).

Thanks
