6spd SIS stem shifters w/ 7spd cogset?

The title sums it up fairly well.

I have a set of Shimano SY/MY-20 or something similar, and I basically wanted to know if the _friction_ mode of the SIS shifters will work properly with a 7spd cogset - because I highly doubt the 6spd SIS mode will.

I've never used such a beast before, I was surprised that 6spd indexed stemmies existed!

Thanks!

Here's a PDF of the part:

It ought to. I have 6 speed downtube shifters working with 9 speed rear gears.

Dont quote me but I was under the impression that 6 and 7 speed cogs were the same spacing. So the index would work but you would be loosing that last gear, so the friction would work fine, I think.

Friction will be no problem. You can ALMOST get proper indexing with 6-speed shifters and a 7 speed cogset, but not quite.

(looking for a picture and not seeing it? Thank the Photobucket fiasco.PM me and I'll link it up.)

Won't work properly. It will shift fine for 3 or 4 cogs and then skip a cog. Usually you can get the largest cog by pushing the shifter past the last index. Friction will work in any case.
