Spin Doctor Essential Tool Kit Opinion

I don't have a lot of experience with working on bikes and I don't know if I want to drop alot of money on tools that I may or may not use over time.

That being said, Performance has the SD Essential Tool kit for $50.00.

https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...egory_ID=4218#

With a $20 coupon I have, it comes to $30.00 for this item. Thoughts on this tool kit?

TIA

I also saw https://www.rei.com/online/store/Prod...=4500889&vcat=

at REI. I've always liked REI's customer service, so I know if the tools break, I can bring them back pretty much anytime. I'm not sure if this tool kit has the exact same tools (or even better?) as the Spin Doctor kit. I'd be willing to spend what would be about $20-40 more (calculating after the coupon) for quality at REI. Thoughts on this kit?

I have the tool kit. Its ok, but the parts are decidedly cheap. A number of them have broken over time. With that said, it was enough stuff to put together a bike (minus the headset installation), so its a pretty good deal for what you get.

I also have that toolkit and think it was a great deal. But I do agree with phoible, some of the parts seem cheap. Notably the cassette and bb tool work fine, but are plated cheaper metal. I have assembled one bike with the kit, plus plenty of routine maintenance. If you need to build a bunch of bikes, its not the kit for you. For a starter kit, I think its perfect. The external bb tool is a great option that most inexpensive kits don't have, so thats a plus as well.

If you don't already have quite a few of those tools, it's a good investment at that price. As the others have mentioned, Spin Doctor tools are not of the highest quality, so some of the tools you use frequently may wear out, in which case you can replace those individual tools with Park, or better yet, Craftsman versions.
