Intermittent squeaking

I would be most grateful for your collective expertise on this problem. a little while ago my bike developed an intermittent squeak. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the rear wheel.

here is what happens these days: for the first part of a ride there's nothin. or at low speeds/slow wheel revolution. but when I start to speed up, the squeaking starts. and it gets more rapid the faster I go. it makes no difference if I'm coasting or pedaling.

the wheelset is bontrager select, if that matters.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

My first guess is dragging brakes. To test, next time you get the squeeks, squeeze the brake lever a bit. Don't squeeze enough to really slow you down, just enough to change the position of the pads, and see if it changes the noise.

So is it a "squeek" or is it more of a "creek"? If the latter, true your wheel; if the former, find it and then kill it.

i recently started an intermittent noise coming from the rear wheel on my Quest with Vista wheels. I checked for clearance on the brakes and all was well. I did not hear a sound when I lifted the frame and spun the wheels, only when i was on the bike.

After taking it to the LBS, the mechanic finally figured it out. The sound was coming from the spokes rubbing the plastic ring. After putting some lube on it, the sound went away.

take off the dork disc.

But make sure your limit stops are adjusted properly first, your lbs Mechanic can show you how to do that, or you can look it up on the parktool website. Its important that you test it to make sure you cant overshift into the spokes.

Derailleur adjustment is really no big deal.

Try putting the tiniest drop of silicon lube that you can manage where the axle emerges from the hub. You might have a dry wiper seal and, if that's the problem, it'll cure it.

Dork disc noises go away when your pedaling. Derailleur pulley noises go away when you're coasting. If your brakes were dragging enough to make a squeel, I think that you'd notice it.

a sincere thanks to one and all who responded.

I tried first putting drops of lube at the contact points where the dork disk encounters the spokes and hub flange.

that eliminated 95% of the squeaking on a subsequent ride.

but the squeaking came back! so I took off the dork disk. I actually haven't ridden that wheelset since taking off the dork disk, but seeing such a dramatic reduction in squeaking after applying lube makes me pretty sure the dork disk was to blame.

and I have to say, the squeaking definitely didn't go away when I was pedaling. I think retrogrouch said that it does.. but mine didnt.
