broken qr axle

i had my front(qr) wheel off and locked to my bike yesterday, and when i put it back on and tried to tighten it just snapped/expoded, sending pieces flying towards some other people who were standing around, and a few microscopic steel splinters into my thumb. should i replace it with another quick release axle, or is the constant running into/over things too stressful for it?(this is my mountain bike. it likes running over curbs) i can't imagine any other reason for it breaking

What kind of QR skewer was this? Also, how old?

There have been some product recalls on defective skewers, and it's possible you have one of the affected models. Also, off-brand stuff is sometimes crap. I don't imagine that curb hopping has any real detriment to the life of the QR--there are QR skewers on all kind of mountain bikes doing burly stuff that don't fail.

I've had a few bend and break over the years. It happens, as it was said sometimes they are just crap skewers. The way a bike is ridden usually doesn't have much affect, the weight of the bike and rider sould be resting on the axle, not the QR. You can replace as necessary but may want to consider upgrading. The best I've found are the Salsa Flip-Offs.

Sounds like the wheels wasn't completely aligned and you were trying to tighten it onto the lawyer nubs??? But yeah, the axle of a skewer isn't the strongest thing in the world. They're only designed to pull the end together to clamp the bike. The axle is the heavy duty part.
