Dear Sheldon, Your website is widely used. In Finland, where I live, most of the time your website is the most useful. Thanks. /Jouni

Sheldon, you are the godfather of the global cycling community. I have printed several pages of material from your site and posted them in my shop... the usefulness of such articles as "Tire Sizing Systems" is incredible. Many, many hours of reading your site has resulted in customers and fellow bike mechanics alike frequently giving me the "how on earth did you know that?!" expression.
Best of luck with your health, and keep the rubber side down! |

Generally the best place to start is http://sheldonbrown.com/glossary or http://sheldonbrown.com/articles But I have also created a number of shortcut links. Thanks to Sheldon Brown and this site. I had a clunk, chunk when I pedaled my old World Sport. Checked the site and the Creaks, Clunks etc, section and bingo. Who'd a thunk the sound I was hearing wasn't coming from my crankset but my saddle! Sheldon Brown would a thunk it, that's who! Sure enough, broken saddle support. Replaced it and my "crankset noise" is gone. Thanks!

Great info on your site Sheldon, but do you ever think you'll remove the "Downhill isn't a sport" discrimination?

Please don't put words into my mouth. All the best, Sheldon |
You are correct Sheldon.
Downhill Racing I consider this fad to be bad for cycling, and contrary to the spirit of cycling. It is effectively just a variant form of motorcycle racing, since the power is provided by the machinery that carries the rider and bike to the top of the run. Bicycling should be a human-powered activity, or it is not bicycling. My apologies for the tone of my post earlier. It was late, and I was tired, but I still wonder at why you hold this opinion? Having raced downhill myself, I can assure you that the cranks are not mere decoration. After racing XC for many years I used to think the same thing, but once I tried a race or two and saw how much sprinting power was needed to do well...my opinion changed. |
sheldon, has your website been down for over a week now? I haven't been able to access it for a while now! i'm lost without it...
thanks |

You didn't say it wasn't a sport, just that it isn't a bicycling sport. My apologies for the tone of my post earlier. It was late, and I was tired, but I still wonder at why you hold this opinion? After racing XC for many years I used to think the same thing, but once I tried a race or two and saw how much sprinting power was needed to do well...my opinion changed. If you want to do downhill, or moped, or motorcycle or automobile or belt sander racing, I have no problem with it, but I personally have no interest in those sports. Actually, I'm not particularly interested in sports in general. I kinda like baseball and sailboat racing, used to follow the Tour de France but the whole drug thing has turned me off that. Have you considered turning your site in to a wiki?

I really wish that they could integrate some wiki functions into this board (FAQs and the stickies are basically unusable in the system that this forum uses).
Sheldon's page is great as is. |
There is a bicycle Wikibook. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Bicycle...nce_and_Repair
I contributed a little, but it was written from a Bicycles for Dummies perspective that I found very difficult to change. |

Sheldon "Ten Years Of Work" Brown It would make navigating simpler for people. I think you've done a great job and have given to the bicycle community a wonderful resource. Thanks. |
That's a great resource. Thanks. This site has an amazing amount of info. Glad I found it

RIP Sheldon. Like many other cycling enthusiasts I used your sites many times. I truly appreciated the work you put into the site.

Dear Sheldon,
I'm so sorry to see you go. My guess is that you're in providing short cuts and mechanical help in heaven. RIP Sheldon Brown. -VR |

Thanks, Sheldon. You helped people do good things.

Sheldon, can you read this forum in Heaven? I assume it wouldn't be Heaven for you if you couldn't. You helped so many people so generously in this world, and your words of wisdom still remain to help countless more in the future. I am sure I speak for them all when I say "Thank You!" for all of your help.
I am sure you will be busy doing new things up there for a while, but when they get around to installing computer terminals in Heaven, make sure you connect back here again; we will all appreciate that day. Meanwhile, you are our patron saint, and perhaps you will find time to look after us cyclists down here now and then and make that motorist drop that cell phone and avoid hitting us along the highway. Thank you. |
