Help...question about new Specialized Expedition

I received a new Specialized '07 Expedition for Christmas. I have only ridden it twice. Yesterday my husband noticed one of the chain rings looked chewed up and not uniform all the way around. He took it to the bike shop and they said that is the way its suppose to be...helps with shifting. Can this be true? Help!

Yes, it is quite OK and perfectly normal.
The ramps, pins and other gubbins help the chain shift from one ring to another much more easily and under higher chain tension.

The LBS is correct. As MichaelW noted, the various shapes and heights of selected chainring teeth plus the pins and other "gadgets" around the rings greatly improve shifting, particularly under load. These enhancements make index front shifting practical.

Thank you!
