Clamp-on Front D hanger on a carbon frame?

I use a cyclocross crankset on my Scott and it currently has a braze on mount.

Is it taboo to put a clamp-on front derailleur hanger on a carbon bike?

I just can't get the front d as low as I like right now...

You currently have a braze-on mount on a carbon tube? That's pretty interesting.

I would guess that its not actually brazed on. The "braze-on" mount on my Giant TCR frame is a piece of plastic that's screwed into the carbon fiber frame.

Why not ask Scott?

There's a reason they go to all the trouble to put a tab on. I'd bet if the frame was built to take a clamp, it would've been sold that way....

Well, my tab is screwed on too but it looks like there is some dried epoxy that oozed out from under it.

Do any carbon bikes use a clamp on?

There is probably no reason why it wouldn't work. However, you could void your warranty if your frame cracks.

I think that Look's Carbon frames use clamp-on derailleurs.

My old Specialized Epic Carbon (was sold under Allez name in US, I think) had a clamp-on. Main reason most carbon bikes use screw/glue/rivet-on holder (of braze-on style) is that it allows for non-standard tube diameter + cross-section shape. You can't sell carbon bikes without funky tube shapes.

Indeed some Look frames (555, 585 among others) are designed for clamp-on. Those that have shaped tubes (595, 486) have braze-ons.

I just purchased a new look frame and it is a clamp on type. It wasn't a cheap frame, and I think look knows what they are doing.
Hope this helps!

I've never seen a CF bike with a clamp-on. I've assumed that it is not a good idea. Dunno

Didn't DrPete just have a major issue recently, with a clamp-on FD on his Pinarello F4:13? I think it cracked the clearcoat, but the verdict was that the frame was okay. Might do a search for that thread, it was within the last month or so, in Road Cycling, I think.
