Workmate told me that Nashbar has 15% off drivetrain parts until Sunday, so I go to order a few of the Nashbar 9 speed by KMC chains, only to find they no longer appear on the website at all! They were there earlier this week. Anyone seen this happen before? I was going to order the chains plus some other stuff anyway, but the cheapest chain is now a Shimano at $25. If it's just while this 15% off sale is happening, it will be cheaper to wait until it's over and order normally.

If you're not looking for narrow chains, Wal-Mart sells KMCs for $6 I believe. They work great...

It seems that whenever they have a really good discount going they pull some of their stuff off the website. Have you tried calling them directly and asking abou tthem then ask to apply the discount?

While I understand your sentiments, this post has absolutely nothing to do with this thread except as it relates to the OP's desire to find a cheap price on a chain. There are other places for debating whether we should actually expect humans to switch their habits from centuries of economic rationality and start purchasing for loyalty in a mass-market setting (whereas only small-market settings or religious/ethnic identities and discrimination have been sufficient to maintain purchasing loyalty in mass-market settings previously).

I got two KMC 8 speed tandem chains from Nashbar on sale for $8.95 a few months ago. They are exactly twice as long as a regular chain....

That's what I was wondering about. If I wait and the items re-appear after the "sale", it will be way cheaper. Seems an odd co-incidence that they disappeared the day before the sale started.

Usually when they take stuff off of their website it is because they are out of stock. They're pretty diligent about keeping the inventory up to date. The only reason why i bring this up is because the disapearing item trick has happened to me when nothing was on sale.

I was planning to get a couple of those too. I checked Thursday morning and they were listed. When I went to make an order last night, they were gone. I guess they sold out.

I've had good luck with the KMC 8-speed chains. Anyone using the 9-speed ones?

I used the Nashbar KMC 9 speed on the Bianchi. It seems to shift very smooth with the friction shifters. Time will tell how it holds up.
The master link was very tight and would not click in even with careful use of pliers. I had to carefully file the hole with a tiny rat-tail file until I could get it to pop in with hard finger pressure..

Yep, the tandem/recumbent chains are a great deal, two for the price of one and the one is dirt cheap to begin with.

I'd say for a budget minded person like me the Nashbar Tandem/Recumbent 8 Speed Chain by KMC with 232 links @ $8.95 was a great deal I just got one to replace my timing side.
3 weeks before that I ordered on for $10.99 which I thought was a good deal with 116 links.
So for a chain with 232 links for $8.95 some might get two chains out of it.

Those KMC links are designed to be assembly links only. You install the link on the bottom, then back pedal to get the link on top, say midway between the crank and rear der., give the crank a good snap forward and the link clicks into place and moves freely. You need a chain tool to disassemble them.

I would be nervous about riding on a link I had filed....chain failures suck!

I've been using the 9-speed version for a while, it's excellent, I won't be going back to SRAM I don't believe. The KMC connector link I received with the chain is virtually identical to a SRAM Power Link. It's easy to connect/disconnect by hand, and is reusable-

Yeah, mine seemed to be a copy of the SRAM links I've been using all along. It's still tighter than the SRAMs, even though I needed to tweak it a bit.

I don't recall any directions (which I always read) included with the chain.
