7 speed DT shifters - can I get these to work?

On my wife's older Trek Multi-Track hybrid, I want to put on some simple downtube 7-speed shifters.

I'm trying to do it relatively cheaply, so I purchased a set of these "SunRace" clamp-on shifters (pic below) which I purchased from Harris for about $23:

The problem is that the bike has no braze-ons for DT shifters, so a clamp seems the only way to go.... when these shifters arrived, the clamp was too small for the larger down tube on her bike. Is there any way to make this one fit, or is there a cheap 7-speed DT shifter (friction or indexed) that has a clamp that will fit on a slightly larger down tube?

Thanks for any help!

I've never seen clamp-on dt shifters made for anything but the old "standard" 1-1/8" downtubes but they may be available. Get in touch with Harris Cyclery to see if they have anything suitable.

Otherwise, you will have to cobble up some way to make the ones you have fit properly or use a differen't type of shifter.

Couple of things to keep in mind...

1. how will you keep those from sliding down the downtube? If you mount them above the brazed cable stops (if you have them) you'll be ok.

2. At the back of the clamp near where the bolt goes through you can try filing/grinding the bracket so the end tabs where the bolt goes through 'straighten up'. You may (key word may) be able to get a longer bolt to fit through.

Why does your wife want DT Shifters? They are more difficult to operate. I take it she has thumbie or Rapid Fire on the bike now. Either of the 2 are excellent working units. Whatever you choose good luck.
