Chain stutter?

I've just set up a single speed bike (free wheel) and gave it a test ride. When I'm riding, if I put too much pressure on the pedals, such as when I want to accelerate more, the pedal stutters forward a little bit. It feels like my chain loses contact with the sprockets for a second, then latches on again. I don't know how to fix this, could anyone help? Thanks.

Did you install new chain and sprocket when you built up the drive chain? This sounds like a classic problem when a worn chain is replaced without replacing the cog it drives.

It is a used bike and the seller said its in like new condition. I've checked the sprockets myself and they seem fine, so does the chain.

Is your freewheel sliding? I've had that happen when it's cold out. I don't suppose you could show us a picture of your setup? Pictures help me think.

Also, measure the chain.

I live in berkeley and I don't think it gets cold enough here to be able to make a difference. I'm going to take it to the shop tomorrow but I was wondering if it was this was a recurrent problem with an easy solution that I could do at home.
