Question Regarding Tandems and Brakeing

My Girlfriend and I recently came accross an old Huffy Daisy Daisy Tandem Frame. We've been planning on a tandem for a while and figured we would use it at least till the tax money comes back to get a Raleigh or Diamondback...

The fun/twisted part is I'm going to build this thing up with an 8 speed hub/roller brake in the back, and a Disc compatible front hub, on Salsa Gordo Rims, hand laced by yours truly. We figured it would be a good setup that we could migrate to the new tandem when we got it.

The question for all you lovely people on the forum, is the front Brake. The front Had a pitiful single pivot caliper on it that was bent anyway... It won't take Cantilevers, of course. We are going to be replacing the fork on it but Disc compatible front forks are hard to find in a 1" size... especially on the cheap.

My main worry is I am a bit heftier gentleman, weighing in at a pretty muscular, but still heavy 225. I'm sure a caliper woludn't provide sufficient stopping power at speed... I'm not sure if Canti's would work or if I should go for a hefty set of V-Brakes.

Thoughts? Ideas? Bueller? Bueller?

This is the only rigid 1" threadless fork I could find, but unfortunatly it doesn't have tabs for disc brakes.

A bit more expensive is the Marzocchi MX Pro. This does have disc brake tabs, and will accept a 7" rotor.

We sell tandems and cantis work fine as do linear pull brakes. So you could get a cheaper threaded fork with bosses on it until you get your dream frame.

With your rear hub, think about what you frame you will end up with because tandems have wider spacing. I can't say how the roller will hold up, none of our bikes have come with one(It would probably be OK there is a fair friction area). Usually there is provison to mount an Arai drum brake that is used as a drag brake for longer descents, It is hooked to a barcon to tune the tension, usually in the stoker spot. You would need a properly threaded hub for that.
Then the bike wil have rim brakes front and rear. Some of the bikes are coming with rim brakes and a disk brake rear(Not a drag brake)

Thanks for the thoughts RevChuck... We don't really deal with tandems at our shop so I figured it wouldn't hurt to fish for advice. I forgot to give all the details on the setup, too, so here they are

the rear hub is a nexus 8 speed, non premium version... I don't know which model roller brake it came with but I do know they have a version that has bigger fins for heat dissipation... I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Fortunately I have low aspirations and my Dream frame is a Raleigh Companion or Diamondback Wildwood Tandem... I love Raleigh stuff and given I'll be riding this with the missus I don't see it being underbuilt or anything. Either are spaced for 135MM so we'll be in good shape as far as that goes.

Have you access to old parts? If so, I would suggest that you should be able to fit an old-style sidepull brake. These brakes offer decent braking, especially if you replace the original pads with Kool Stop Salmon threaded pads (the ones for mountain bike fit perfectly). You will get almost as good braking with such a brake as you would have gotten with new cantilevers or disc brakes.

Of course, performance will be a bit less in the rain, and if you go down 10-km hills, you'll need to stop a few times to cool the rims.

Have you priced out the parts and thought this through?

I'm thinking that, by the time you get the new wheel parts and front fork and brake, you're going to be coming close to the total price of the Raleigh Companion.

Yeah, I did the Parts analaysis... Always the first step in any build that I do.

Aside from the wheelset, It's worth it to do. I'm not really counting the wheels in the total build cost for this project though, mostly because I can move them over from bike to bike easily and I've wanted a nexus hub to tinker with for a while.

I do have easy access to front forks on the level of 'beggars can't be choosers.' I'll have to repaint whatever I get to match the rest of the frame, however.

I would be petrified of a sidepull on a tandem, especially given that the front brake does most of the work. Hell, I'm petrified of the Dia-Compe on my fixie - I can see it bend.

Thanks for the link, somehow I missed that when I looked at your site... Good to know I'm on the right track, when I tried to free the old stem from the fork the thing flexed more than any fork I've worked with...
