run a chain without master/power link?

hello all,
newbie q: is the only point of the power link that of toolless chain removal?
i recently did a chain cleaning. removed chain by pushing out a pin on a regular link. in process of cleaning, sram power link came undone and now it seems looser than before. i feel uneasy riding with it. can i just replace the powerlink with a regular?

Yeah, just replace it. The powerlink isn't suppose to be reusable. Sucks. Learned that yesterday myself.

SRAM Powerlinks are for tool-less chain removal and can be re-used repeatedly.

not the new 10 spd ones

Its also possible to lose the powerlink from a SRAM 8 speed chain. Naturally, it happened to me right in the heart of our Downtown area. I almost went down in the middle of a left turn. No chance of finding the missing link so I walked 2 blocks to my LBS & borrowed a chain tool to fix it. Now I'm Master linkless!

Only the 10 speed ones. All other powerlinks ARE reusable. That's the point.

I'm not a 10 speed guy so I forget they're not reusable. Used to be a 10 speed guy in the 70's but that was different.

I only have used the 10 speed one, so I can't speak to any of the others. I would think that it would be a good idea to have them be reusable. Wonder why the 10 speed is different?
