switching bars and shifters in a mtb help?

I am finally getting around to working on a bike I have, that I ride pretty often, but want to fool around with the setup. 88ish Schwinn Impact. I want to switch from Riser bars with thumbshifters to moustache bars with bar end shifters. I've gotten some info from the good folks in C&V that any decent barcons will work, but will any moustache bars work? I'm looking at the nashbar bars, as they come in both road and MTB sizes, and I like the shape. My question is will any bar end shifters fit in any bar end? or will I need to change out the stem, too (to fit road diameter bars). I'm hoping to not change the brake levers either, because I don't want to open a different can of worms. any guidance is appreciated. I don't own any of the parts yet.

My bet is that your parts will swap over but best check.

I just measured the id of a few different handlebars that I had in my basement. The road bars measured 20mm. The mountain riser bars that I had varied from about 17mm to about 19mm. I test fit a Suntour barcon and it would fit in the 19mm handlebar but won't go into one that's 18.3mm.

The od's are different too. 22mm for the mountain bars (at the handgrip area) and 24mm for the road bars. I wouldn't bet on the brake levers fitting but these aren't mustache bars so YMMV.

Good luck.

Nashar states their Moustache bars fit barcons. They show road brake levers on them also. I am almost positive that MTB brake levers are a smaller diameter. If you ordering from Nashbar, then just buy a set of their road brake levers. They are under $20 and you can have them shipped with the new cables, handlebars, tape and stem you'll need. Good luck it sounds like a real fun project.
