No, Seriously! (Removing A Threadless Fork)

I am trying to swap parts from one frame to another. I have this generic suspension corrected disc fork, and I am trying to get it out of the frame it is currently on. I removed the stem, and the top cap, and then tried whacking it with a hammer, and it wouldn't budge. I thought these things were supposed to just pop out - do I need to knock the star nut out first to get the steerer to come out of the head tube?

Perhaps there is a split ring that fits into the top bearing that is causing things to bind up a bit. These are found in some sealed bearing headsets.

So do I pry it out or something?

Prying sometimes works, but it can damage the nylon which can range from a mild inconvenience if you're picky about how things look to making it difficult for it to reaseat properly if you really botch it up.

Sometimes a 'back and forth' motion works.... hit down.... then hit the bottom of the fork UP... at least if if's a wedge causing teh issue it should move up a bit then....

I'm not too worried about the headset - it's pretty messed up anyway, and I have a new one waiting to be used. I will try the ring when I get back from work, and if that doesn't work I guess I will try the hammer again.
