Broken Freehub

I was climbing a steep hill on my mtn bike yesterday when I heard a snap, thats usually bad. I found that the freehub would now spin independently from the hub. I removed the axel and found that there was no internal bolt to remove the freehub body on this hub. The model is a Shimano LX Paralax, I think its an older hub as I bought the wheel from someone. Looks to me like I got to get a hub and rebuild the wheel.

Nope. After you remove the bearings, cones and axle, stick a 10mm allen wrench in where the axle goes and it'll allow you to remove the freehub body. Stick a new one on and you're good-to-go.

That's one of the things that I like best about Shimano.

Yeah, I've done that before, but did Shimano ever make a hub that didn't have removeable bodies, because When I stuck the 10mm in there weren't any splines for it to catch.

OK I looked at the Hub closely and did see splines, But the 10mm was too big, a 9 fit and removed the body. I found that the threads it was screwing into were actually an insert which has broken loose. Repairing this hub looks pretty hopeless.

Doesn't sound like something I'd want to try fixing. Is this a "main bike" or a "spare bike"?

If you have a bike to ride and you're looking for a project, scan your neighborhood on trash pick up day. It shouldn't take very long to find a trashed rear bicycle wheel. Take your time and be picky until you find one with a Shimano freehub - it'll show up trust me. The flange diameter and spacing on almost all Shimano hubs are the same so you might even be able to reuse the same spokes for a zero cost repair.

Been there, done that.

Me too.

Actually the flange diameter and spacing on some other hubs are also the same as Shimano. I've "upgraded" a couple of wheels that had Maillard and Sansin freewheel hubs to Shimano freehubs using Shimano hubs rescued from my LBS's trashed wheel discard pile. I relaced them using the old wheel's rim and spokes and everything fit perfectly.
