Pedal Thread Problem
Just got a pair of pedal extenders to prevent my heels (size 51 shoe) from hitting the chain stay. Unfortunately I'm having a problem threading the right pedal (Speedplay X5) into the extender (left one went in fine). It went in a few turns and won'tt go any further. Since the pedal has been on the bike for a few years, I soaked it in WD40 overnight to remove any grease. I was then able to turn it some more but it still only goes in about half way before tightening up. I thought I might be cross threading but I'm not.
I believe the threads on the extender are fine as I was able to screw in an old platform pedal. When I hold the Speedplay pedal next to the platform pedal, it seems like the diameter of the Speedplay threads is a hair wider but don't know why. I'm thinking about taking a thread file and filing down threads just a little but don't want to ruin them. Any insight into why the pedal won't fit into the extender or any other suggestions besides filing down the pedal thread?
Thanks in advance!

Didja grease the threads? That's really important.
Do you have a proper pedal wrench, or at least a good quality 15 mm open end? Some variance in thread tolerance is normal, and it is not unusual for pedals to require a fair amount of force. That's why pedal wrenches have such long handles.

Don't file the threads on the pedal. Did the pedal thread into the crankarm OK before? If so the threads in the extender are the problem. Either take the extenders back or chase the threads with a tap of the correct size and pitch.

Sheldon -- Yep, greased the threads on both the pedal and the extender. I just used a regular crescent wrench since the left side went in easily with very little effort. Maybe I'll give the pedal wrench a try...I just don't want to strip the threads or put so much torque into it that I can't get them apart if I don't like the extenders.
Al -- Yes, the pedal went into the crankarm with no problem before and after. The other platform pedal that fits into the extender threads into the crankarm too.
