BMX bent chainring.

A coworker brought me his kid's BMX bike, a Rhino "Turn N Burn". The chainring is slightly bent, he claims from his kid leaning the bike over because the kickstand has been loose for a few years. Should I attempt to bend it back, or should I just replace it? It's steel, but I have no idea the quality of the steel. It's bent enough to where it touches the frame and has scraped off some paint, and obviously the chain keeps popping off. Ashtabula crank. He says that his kid barely rides it, and never does any tricks or jumps or anything like that.

You can bend it back; that's one the advantages of steel.

If you are worried about it you can get a replacement at most bike shops for about $5.

It's like truing a wheel. They normaly get bent by hitting a curb or someone to heavy cranking hard on it. Laying it down w/o a KS is not the case...

I like to use a Long Screw Driver. Tip the bike upside down. Take the chain off the sprocket and turn the crank watching the sprocket. Put the Blade of the Screwdriver into the crank and bend out. To go From outside to in. Use a hammer & tapping will do. {Caution if you use an actual CW tool it will most likely bend the teeth and not the CW if you have never used one before}

AS for the $5.00? You will need to remove the left pedal {Left>turns 2 right to remove}and locknut / key washer / cone for this 1pc crank {Ashtabula crank}. The nut on the CW is normal threading. So you can get to the sprocket. Which may be more then just that part?

When you assemble it back. Back off the con about 1/4 turn for the locknut will tighten the crank. You will have to set it a few times.
