Cassette Grooves..BAD??

My American Classic 420 freewheel has some pretty deep gouges in it after only 500 miles.

Is this a typical wear, or is something screwed up?

Alloy free hub body? If so you should only run the spidered cassettes( Ultegra or higher) The chepaer cassettes are just a series of plates and spacers and they will mess up an alloy body pretty quick.
Not have the locknut tight will also contribute to the problem.

Ok, my next question is - what is the advantage of alloy freehub bodies vs those that let you use any type of cassette on it and not incur this kind of damage?

well, for a chris king drive shell, the claimed mass of the aluminum drive shell is 30g, and for the stainless, 84g. a little more than 20g, which for a light weight rider, or a professional racer can be a definite perceivable difference. i'm a lighter rider, but also a mechanic, so honestly, the difference in weight is not worth the decrease in durability, or the extra work it takes to pull a cassette off a drive shell that has been grooved. i've seen an aluminum zipp drive shell that had been grooved all the way around in one spot.
