Does grease go bad?
I have a tube of Shimano brand 'Spin Doctor' grease. I'm guessing it's at least a few years old. I opened it up for the first time in probably a year and a half, and noticed that there was flourescent yellow oil running out of the tube. It seems that some of the 'oil' is separating from the 'goo'.
I usually put my grease into a big syringe so i can apply it more neatly, and did this as usual.. i used a disposable chopstick to kind of stir the liquid and goo back together, and it seems normal enough now..
is this something to worry about? has this grease 'expired'?
Thanks,
Robin

Grease is just a mixture of oil and soap. Stir it up and see if it still smells good. Some types of grease can go rancid.

Grease is cheap. The only grease I've ever seen go bad was some stuff my Dad had, left over from WWII.
Geez, invest $5 and get enough of the green stuff (waterproof marine grease) to last you for five or ten years. I'm liberal with grease and I'm still on the same tube of grease (at the shop) that I started on a year ago. If you are into the boutique grease, spend $10 and get enough to last two or three years.
You should spend more time on useful threads like "what is the best chain lube?", or "how should I clean my chain?".

Chinese grease can 'go bad', ie the volatiles either evaporate or the stuff polymerizes. Not a bike,
but a 3n1 machine tool I bought in '93 and used sporadically for a few years, then let sit in the
basement for 7yrs, had a frozen spindle. Turned out the 'grease' in the tapered bearings had
metamorphosed into paraffin and locked up the spindle.

Of course "Grease" can go bad. Just view "Sixth Sense."
