New cassette

Today I replaced my 105 11/23 cassette with a ultegra 12/27 cassette. The install seemed to go easy. I am getting a touch of noise when the chainline is one the big ear/ big gear. So I'm not concerned at this point. Should I just re-oil the chain and go or should I do something else? The chain is only 1 month old BTW.

You shouldn't be using that gear combination.

yeah, I know that. That is why I'm not worried about it. I just noticed it as I was transitioning through all the gears.

Measure the chain every time you change a cassette just to be sure. Very easy either with a ruler or a gauge. If the cassette was brand new a little extra lube wouldn't hurt, but otherwise you should be good to go. Enjoy!

Aside from not using the big/big or small/small combinations, your chain might be a little short for the larger cassette. As long as your RD isn't overextended, you'll be ok.

How do I tell if the RD is over extended?

Shift into the big/big. If you have any travel left on the derailleur arm, you're OK.

You avoid cross-chaining not because it can over-extend the dérailleur (it can), but because it puts tremendous stress on the chain and cogs. Chains are designed with a little side play, but not that much.
