Bottom Bracket Issue

I was in the middle of a great ride - halfway up our little piece of hell in NW Arkansas affectionately called "The Wall" and then my crank locked up. "The Wall" is straight up and is one hell of a climb so I figured that I just completely bonked and lost all energy but got back on and couldn't go anywhere.

I stopped by the LBS and they quickly said the bottom bracket was gone from the torque of going up the hills. In NW Arkansas you can't ride 3 miles without at least one big hill. I just got my new Ultegra drivetrain last year and this happened. I'm assuming there is some sort of warranty? I didn't think this could happen. Is it just bad luck or could something short of not climbing have prevented this?

Doesn't make sense. A properly installed BB shouldn't have problems with this type of riding. They are designed for a lot of abuse.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I'm average joe rider on a big hill and that was it. I took it back to the LBS that installed my stuff last year hoping they won't charge me as I've spent way too much cash on bike extras lately. :D

Shimano Ultegra components are covered under a 2 year warranty from Shimano. This covers manufacturing defects only and not improper installation or abuse. That being said, BBs broken from torque on the crank arms is extremely rare. Good luck!
