shimano STI triple to double.

I recently switched my triple crank for a double. I know the STI lever can be used for both triple and double, but I can't figure out how to get rid of the third stop. At the moment I just have it limited out, but it makes for some really awkward shifting. Can anyone enlighten me on how this should be done?

thanks,
Erik

You talking about the trim stop? That's rather normal.

What model and "speed" STI? Ultegra and 105 8-speed STI's were double or triple specific and you will have an extra useless click if you use a triple STI with a double crank. The 105 and Ultegra 9-speed STI's were both double and triple compatible and gave an extra trim click if used with a double.

Nope, it works with both double and triple cranks. Set the inner and outer limit screws, click the brifter's inner lever several times to be sure the shifter is in the smallest chainring setting, then pull the cable snug and clamp it firmly under the fd clamp bolt. (Be sure to run the cable outside of the tab next to the bolt). Adjust the tension with the cable adjusting barrel if needed.

Go to the Shimano site and find the Service Instructions for one of the triple STI sets. They will include instructions on how to use the trim detent.

I did this just last week - changed from triple to double crank on a bike with 9-speed STI shifters. If you look at the technical documents on the Shimano website, they explain that the first click on the left shifter is basically used as a trim setting so that you can ride in a large chain ring/large rear cog setting without rubbing the FD. The second click is used for moving the chain from the large chain ring to the small chain ring.

The only way to get ride of the unwanted clickstops is to use Dura-Ace 9-speed double shifters, but your extra click(s) aren't hurting anything. I agree with Hillrider and DMF, above.
