old seven-speed campy index - what freewheel brands?
So...that's my question. How do I know that a given seven-speed freewheel will work with 7-speed Campy index shifters?

This system was basically flawed to begin with, because it used excessively short cable travel per shift. This magnified the effects of cable stretch and cable friction, and they basically never worked properly.
Actually, Campagnolo deserves credit for good intentions...their plan was to make a system that would provide indexing using their older derailers. Unfortunately, it just couldn't work.
Eventually they gave up on Synchro and went to their current system, which uses lots of cable travel per shift, even more than Shimano (though not as much as some Sram stuff.)
Basically, you're wasting your time trying to get this to work.

You could always set them to friction - I'm assuming they'll go friction. Almost every 7 speed freewheel out there uses a 5.0mm spacing between cogs, though, so pick any one for your project.
