I phoned Calfee, and they said they'd call me back, . . . but since that hasn't happened yet, does anyone here know the correct front derailluer clamp diameter for a Calfee Tetra Pro?

I've just purchased a used Tetra Pro frameset, and there is what looks like a spacer (black plastic) around the seat tube where the front derailluer would be attached. Is this to protect the carbon frame from damage due to the clamping action of the front derailluer, or can it (safely) be left off?

I too recently got a used Tetra Pro. I had it stripped by my LBS and shipped to Calfee for insection and extension of the 25 year warranty. I was at the LBS when the frame came back and asked about the piece of plastic and the mechanic said it was for the derailleur, so, not being a mechanic, I'd assume it was a necessary piece.

That does help, because I will have to take the additional diameter of that black plastic spacer into account when I find (I'm still trying!) what size clamp diameter to use.

You don't happen to remember what size front derailleur you used? If so, pls. advise!

I'll check mine tonight when I get home. I have an older Tetra Tri and it has an aluminum shim for the derailleur clamp. I am almost positive it's a 31.8mm clamp-on.

That 31.8 makes sense, but I will wait until I hear back from you before I buy the derailluer!

You must use the spacer and make darn sure that the opening is directly opposite the open part of the clamp. Failure to do this might result in a hole punched in the downtube which is what I did that in turn cost me $250 and a return to the factory. Learn from my stupidity.

I thought the FD clamp was the 32.x size, but I am neither positive nor in the position to measure it (it's not here at work.)

That sure reminds me of the opening line in the old (and maybe the new?) Sutherland's Guide that states (if I remember correctly), something to the effect that:

"One measurement is better than a hundred educated guesses."

I will order the 1-3/8" (34.9) derailluer today!

And thanks to Terry B. for the note on correct location/alignment of the opening on the derailluer and the spacer. This is my first carbon frame (its still not a "bike" quite yet), and since I do all my own mechanical work I have a lot to learn!
