upgrading brakes

i have a felt sr81 bike which i am very happy with except for the brakes.

it has a road bike frame/wheelset with upright handlebars and shimano v-brakes. the next level up in bike has shimano deore type v-brakes.

i have always thought the brakes were a little on the soft side..had them readjusted after a recent crash and they are well centered and mechanically seem to work fine. i just want a little more stopping power...im 6 ft 205 lbs btw

would upgrading just the pads help me? ...or would buying a better v-brake set/levers help be more?

Change to a grippier pad. Shortening the housings helps. Also some bikes have a "safety" spring in the J-tube. Loosen up your cable, pull the housing out of the J-tube and look in there. You will see the spring if there is one. If it is theree go to a shop and get some regular ones, makes a big difference.
