Axle springs

Are the little springs on both ends of the axle important? I am cleaning up a 36 year old schwinn and one of the springs on the rear axle is all screwed up. It doesn't seem it like would add any mechanical advantage, are they just there to make it easier to remove the wheel?

Thanks

Do you mean the springs on the skewer?

yes

Those make the skewer separate evenly on both sides when you release the lever. The wheel wont fall off or anything without one of the springs. But you can probably pick up one cheap at a local bike shop.

They are a convenience, not a necessity. As noted, they center the skewer over the axle so installing the wheel is easier.

Thanks that's what I figured.

A while back I lost one of my springs somehow. Went to my LBS to buy one. The guy gave me a handful for free.
