Will an 1/8" chainwhip remove a 9 speed cassette?

I want to invest in a chain whip, but I swap cogs on my fixed bikes more often than I remove cassettes on my geared ones, so I'd prefer to get an 1/8" chainwhip. I imagine that the thicker chain is not ideal for removing cassettes, but does it work in a pinch?

My other options are to either just rely on rotafixing, or use a chain tool to modify the chainwhip depending on the job. Let me know what has worked for you! Thanks!

To be honest I didn't know the whips came in sizes. I have two I bought size unseen and have used them on cogs from 6 speed Uniglide (thick cog) cassettes to 10 speed Campy.

Give it a try, but if not a chainwhip is quite cheap. The Nashbar one is only $10.

Most likely it will work. I made one from a chain scavanged from one of my daughter's old 12" wheeled bikes. It doesn't have to do much more than hold the cassette in place. That being said, like the previous poster noted, it is a very inexpensive tool to purchase..

It'll work on just about any cassette...just use it on the largest cog.

I use mine on everything from 7 speed to 10 speed. It doesn't fit great on the 10 speed, but it does the job. It doesn't need to be perfect, it isn't like you have to pedal with a chain that fat.

If you are buying a new chainwhip, a narrow one will work on wider spaced cassettes or on SS.
Also a wide one will work on narraw cassettes, just be careful to not let it get jammed between cogs.
