can rust spots come off?
my cousin bought a Wheeler mountain bike a few years back. he used to take so much care of it but has recently lost interest. he said he'd give me the bike for free :) I haven't seen it yet. he said he left it out in his balcony last winter...what a genius!!! but says it still looks ok. however, he noticed that some parts of the frame are spotted with rust. is this fixable? i know i could take it in for a full tune-up but i'm just worried about how well i could get rid of the rust spotting.

I think it would depend how bad the rust is where it is etc.. minor lil'spots are not that big a deal. I had some on a old road bike, I got them off with a scrub brush.

it really depends how far you want to take it...
You can remove the rust and paint it yourself... Or you can have it professional done. |
is it expensive to get it done professionally?
how bad could the parts and frame be damaged by the harsh wheather conditions? |
If you have a Dremel, use the wire brush attachment and remove all the rust. If not sand or steel wool the spot clean carefully.
Then go to a car store and buy a tube of touch up paint that comes close to your bike (a paint chip always help). I always buy a tube of clear coat too. Dab some paint on and let dry. Add another coat and let dry. Put on a coat of clear coat. This works great for small rust areas. I have also heard of people using nail polish but I haven't tried it. |
thanks for the help guys :)
