Rear Der. Deep Clean
I'm moving my campy record 9spd der to a new bike. I can take this opportunity to give it a deep cleaning. I was thinking of shaking it around in a jar full of some grease cutting agent (degreaser, white gas, soap), but I don't know what that will do. Or I can just scrub it with a brush and soapy water in my sink. It's pretty dirty. I've liberally lubed it, but rarely cleaned it. I would prefer to not take off all the little parts though (limit screw, pulleys). Any suggestions?

Pulleys are no big deal, I would definitely take those off and clean them and their environment.
I've grown wary of degreaser baths unless I know exactly where grease is actually supposed to be as well, so I can put it back when the degreaser is rinsed off and the part(s) dried out.

Some pulleys have bearings that are lubed. You don't want to strip them of lubrication and not replace it.

white gas?? WHITE GAS?? its highly explosive, y'see. more so than regular gas, and thats bad enough. dont degrease with gas.

Buy a spray can of brake parts cleaner, the kind with a straw. You can really blast grease off with that stuff, and reach anywhere without disassembly. Plus it dries quickly and leaves no residue. Heck, it's made to spray on your car's brake pads. Then relube.

Mineral spirits and a toothbrush is what I've been using for the last 40 years or so. I don't like what products like Simple Green do to the finish on alluminum parts.
