bike computer question

Hi I'm new to the group and I have a question concerning a bike computer.

I have never used a computer on a bike before I'm having trouble getting a reading from it. The instructions say clearance between magnet and sensor should not be greater then 1/6''(4mm). It's made by a company called bell. I have the magnet close to touching the sensor.Do they have to be really exact? Any help would be appreciated

Welcome to the Forums.

I'm moving this to Bike Mechanics, where it may get more replies.

Do you get a reading at all? For example, if you move the magnet a couple of times past the sensor, holding them in your hands? If it's a wireless comp (no wires between sensor and handlebar mount), make sure you have fresh batteries in the sensor.

Does the display show any reading - even 0 mph?
If the display is blank check the battery.
Is there a line on the sensor? If so the magnet should align with the line.

Also play with the magnet/sensor orientation a bit. What might look perfect might not be that way. Move the magnet up/down the spoke slightly. Maybe +/- 3/8" and less.

Make sure the distance from the transmitter ( on your fork) to the receiver (handlebar mounted computer) is within the distance recommended by the manual (usually no more than 18" - 24"). Also, remove the battery from the transmitter and do a light scrape on the top of the battery terminal. Sometimes these things (even new) sit in inventory somewhere for quite a long time. Before you do that though, rotate the wheel and listen for a small click sound every time the magnet passes the transmitter. If you here nothing than you need to adjust magnet and/or check that battery as described above. Or for 3-6 bucks you could just replace the battery without messing with it.

Hi Everyone

Sorry I forgot to mention the display does show up. I will try your some of your ideas and hopefully I can get it to work.

thanks Brad
