speedometer woes

I have a Cateye wire-type speedometer (cyclcomputer) I used on my aluminum Moongose hybrid. It worked fine. I put the unit on my new bike, a Jamis steel frame, and now the MPH reading fluctuates wildly. I put in a new battery, made double-sure the sensor and magnet was lined up, but still the same thing. Anyone have any ideas before I return the unit to the factory? Could the switch from aluminum to steel frame somehow affect my speedometer?

I've had the same situation with a wired computer on my steel Surly framed bike. But I was able to fix it by making sure the sensor and magnet were not only lined up properly, but also within the distance suggested in the instructions.

I had a similliar problem when they were lined up, but too far away or during the rain. I would fix the distance and see what that does.

The pickup and wheel magnet need to be within 2mm of each other.
Cateye also offers a "highpower" magnet that helps if you cannot get the pickup/magnet close enough.
