Tried to remove fork and...
 

So I recently got a new bike, its Canadian Tire brand, so its not that great but I am just getting in to biking so I think it will do. Anyway, I brought the bike home and noticed that when I hold the front brakes there is some movement in the place where the fork goes through the frame. I didn't think this was normal so I removed the handle bars and then the nut thingy on top and took out the fork and a lot of balls from a bearing poured onto the floor. Im not going to look for all of them so I was wondering If I can buy a whole new bearing system thing for the front , if so how much does it cost to get it installed?

Ball bearings are cheap. You need to fill the cup and then remove 2 balls. Fill it up with grease, put it back together and tighten the top until there is no more play, but the bars still turn without resistance. THEN tighten the lock nut. You'll probably need to get a lockring wrench to hold the top in place while you tighten that.

If you want a bike shop to do it, it shouldn't cost too much. Where I work it probably wouldn't run more than $10

interesting.. so I got a good look at the fork and the asswipe at canadian tire didnt fill the botton part of the fork with ball bearings so now I have to buy some and fix that myself. Earler I was trying to put the bike back together because it was taken apart everywhere and when I went to put the for back on I couldnt get the cap overtop of these metal rings http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/Flambo/BIKE.jpg

I should have paid more attention when I was taking off the fork but i didnt :( if someone could tell me how to get that cap over those rings that would help me out alot

I say take it back to crappytire and tell them you want a new one

I would but It will cost me $50 worth the gas just to get back there, im sure it isnt too hard to fix this just for some reason those rings arent fitting under that cap

okay so maybe in that picture i posted I was wrong, those greasy rings are spacers right? Are they supposed to go underneath that cap thing or ontop of it and underneath the handle bar stem. I also found bearings to fill the bottom so I can almost put it back together. I just stumped with these rings which I believe are spacers. I am sure when I took off the handle bars they were underneath that cap thing that covers one set of bearings. I could be wrong though.

The spacers (rings) go on top of the bearing cover (cap thing). So your re-assembly will go: bearing cover, spacers, stem then headset cap. Slide everything on the fork, tighten the headset cap down, then tighten stem down.

Thanks for the flashback Flambo. I remember my first time pulling apart a loose bearing headset and having the balls scatter to the four winds.

Reading the op I could just hear the "OH *****" as the balls scattered. I just had to chuckle.

hahah, I had no clue the bearings were loose in there, i thought there was a cartridge or something to hold them but I guess not :) Anyway, I managed to get my bike back together and the fork is alot tighter to the frame. When I first got it I could feel a noticeable shift when I pressed the front brake but not any more.
