disc brakes?

i want to start upgrading my bike. i was thinking a better, more travel fork, but they all seem to require disc brakes. i was wondering if you can put disc brakes on a bike that only has V brakes. it would help me out a lot. Thanks for all the help

Yes you can if. You'll need:

1. fork w/ disc mounts
2. frame w/ rear disc mounts
3. disc specific hubs and discs on your wheel set.

Not necessarily. Most/many frames come with disc mounts, even though they have V-brakes. Look on the right side of your frame, slightly forward of your axle. You may see two tabs for mounting rear calipers.

Or just run disc brakes on the front, and stick with the V's on the rear if your frame does not have the mounts.

Sure. Essentially, you'll have to:

1. Buy disk hub and new spokes
2. Remove rim from old wheel
3. Rebuild wheel with disk hub, new spokes and old rim

It might be cheaper to buy a set of disc compatible wheels. For example, Jenson sells a set for $89:

Are you checking that the forks you are looking at in addition to having the lugs to fit disc brakes... also have the studs to fit regular V Brakes? Simply because it will take a disc brake does not automatically mean you cannot also fit a V Brake if the studs are there. My bike has a front disc brake, but I also have the studs for normal brakes.
