- saw in today's paper that a number of new ('07) Cannondale bike cranks are being recalled...

This is definitely like two months old. At the shop we pulled and warrentied all the cranks that this recall applied to. Supposedly the aluminum spindle near the drive-side cranks would fracture, and one could see the cracks, but they looked just like the scratches made during installation.
