Cable routing on barcons ???

Ok, so I've never owned a bike with anything nicer than downtube shifters, and I'm upgrading to bar end shifters. The instructions are not clear about how to install the cable housing. By the looks of the length of cable that they came with, there isn't enough to route it all the way up the handlebar. So is it normal to have the housing just stick out part way up the handlebar, or run straight down to the down tube? Seems like it would really get in the way. I searched the forums and couldn't find any good advice on this, although I'm sure it has been given before. Any pointers on installing these babies? Do I just have to go buy more housing if I want the job done right, or is there a way to route it normally with the housing supplied? BTW, they are Ultegra 8spd shifters.

I wrapped about four turns of bar tape around them from the end of the bar to give them a bit of support, then they make a big curve around to the cable stops on the down-tube shifer bosses.
Here's a pic of my Cross Check:

Do you have to cable stops for the down-tube shifter bosses? Like these:loose screws web link

Before wrapping the bar tape, give them a good tight wrap with electrical tape.

Traditional setup is housing exiting the bar wrap at the first bend of the drops, as on the two bikes above. Many people testify that they maintain excellent shifting with full routing under the bar wrap up to the stem, but I think you'll have to buy longer cables and housing to achieve that.

If your wraping tape is not adhesive it will cost you nothing to try to wrap the cables to the stem. I doubted my housings were long enough too but they were. Try it. Meaux

Usually the stock supplied housings are not long enough to route them "ergo" style.

Indeed. My routing is similar to what Roadfix did. It's superb, plus the cables never interfere with my fingers. But I need a rear shifter cable for the front derailleur and a 3-m long tandem rear shifter cable for the rear derailleur.

I routed the cables that came with my 8spd shimano bar cons "ergo" style with no length problem. I also had no shifting issues either. I dont think you lose much by trying what they come with and buying more at the LBS if needed. Also if your frame is huge you can use a tandem cable.
