Jagwire Ripcords
 

Are Ripcord brake cable/housing for mtb only or are the cables dual ended for both road and mtb? I need new brake cables for my roadie and a lot of internet info, as reliable as it may be, seems to point to mtb only. Universalcycles.com says both, most ebay Ripcord sellers say mtn in the heading and both in the description, and Jagwire.com says mtn - I need something a little more definitive to get make a purchase.

Contact Bike Tools Etc. They sell Jagwire cables and should be able to give you a definitive answer.

Wow, nobody has actually used the ripcords...? Man, I wished roadbikereview had a cable section.

Most are mountain only. Some sets inlcude the double ended cables, so be sure and make some phone calls first. Also note that the ferrules included are nosed.

I have a set of these cables I'm going to use on my road bike. I plan on running them with the liners and nosed ferrules to keep the cables sealed from the elements. I'll be sure and post how it works.

Anyone got further on the ripcord debate? I'm doing a build (ultegra 9 speed) and want orange cables.. which, apparently, are nigh-mythical for road bikes.

Perhaps I'll wander the local bike shops and see if I can find some.

For the archives, an update.

I emailed Jagwire, their response was (paraphrased):

"The units were modified mid-season to be mountain specific and have single ended wires. The derailler kit is fully compatible with your ultegra shifters and the brake kit would need the wires replaced with Shimano road brake cables"

They suggested jagwire p/n 92TC1700 (teflon coated) or 92BC1700 (galvanized) would work, and also pointed out that the brake cables are extremely stiff, and would probably need extra taping to keep them under the bar wrap.

Wow dem you obviously have more will than I do because I never thought of going through that trouble. Imagine my surprise when I saw this "old" thread of mine under the new posts area.

I was actually looking at the orange ones myself.

Anyways, I went with Avid Flak Jackets (also pretty stiff housing) and they are wonderful. Install is time consuming, but it keeps the cable clean. Isn't as smooth as some generic stuff I used (I might of roughed up the install), but after 3 months it still feels like new so I guess that is the advantage. Still would have wanted to those fancy kevlar/teflon orange cables though....
