fixing rust spots
What is the best way to prep an old steel mtb frame to get rid of rust? It is a beater so I'll probably just use touch-up paint once the spots are cleaned up.
Sorry if this has been done to death...

Bikes: One brand-less build-up, and a Connondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra Disc. A nicer bike than I need, but it was a good deal, so... ;-)

Personally, I swear by phosphoric acid (Naval Jelly), IF you can be certain that you'll get it all off. Phosphoric acid convers the iron oxide into iron phosphate, whcih is a rust preventative and darned good initial primer. However, that IF is significant. If it stays in there (in a crevice) or under the paint it will keep etching things and can lead to embrittlement.

sand/media blasting is likely the best way to prep a frame for paint however if it's an old frame and you're paying someone to do the blasting for you it may not be worth it.

I was thinking oil and steel wool and elbow grease. Then touch up with something from the hardware store...

do whatever is easiest and removes all of the rust. i've used dremmels for larger areas of surface rust. for small chips caused by rocks i use a needle to scratch out the rust.
yes, it will help with durability to a degree
