Choosing a tandem MTB rim

These are the options I can choose from. If I lived in the USA, or if I were rich, the list would be longer. Alas, these are my options. Also, the rim has to be compatible with rim brakes. Kindly tell me your opinions, thank you.

Personally, I am partial to the 48H rim, more spokes = stronger.

Special Note: I need 26" rims, for a tandem bike. Not 20". Not 700C. Yes I do have a 48H hub already, it's not a limiting factor.

I'd try to find a Sun rims Rhyno Lite.

I know for sure that they come in 36 and 40 hole versions, don't know about 48. It's a very tough rim and relatively economical. Unfortunately, it's not the easiest rim to install tires onto.

Thanks Grouchy, if the rims you propose are very much stronger than the ones I listed, and are not much more expensive, I'll look into them. 40H is out of the question, as I don't have such a hub.

You need a 'WTF?' option.

+1 on the Rhyno Lites, and according to the Sun website, they are available in 48h. Can't say I've ever seen one in person with 48h, but it's worth looking into. Rhyno Lites are as bombproof as you can get for XC mountain biking. They're somewhat wider than typical, so keep that in mind.

Depending on your designated usage of this rear rim.. more holes on the rims does not equal to stronger rim, just means that you have less material to support the weight of the tandem.

You want rims with stainless steel eyelets, welded seam and machined sidewalls.

If you could find any Bontrager or Ritchey off-center-drilling rims they might be good options to look into.

Some of the best 26" tandem rims I've seen are the Velocity Cliffhanger, and the Salsa Gordo. Not sure what the cost is relative to what you have been looking at.

I've heard good things of the Salsa Gordo, and I could order it from Germany, even in 48H, but it's a bit pricy, especially adding the shipping. However, seems like the best option at the moment.

+1 on the Gordos, That's what I'm running on the tandem.

For what it's worth, 48hole isn't as critical on a 26 inch tandem as it is on a 27/700c wheel, as long as the rim itself is decent quality.

That said, if you can somehow get the DT Swiss Cheaper, I'd give that one a good vote too. (I put it that way because the Gordo was less expensive for me than the DT swiss, but it might be the other way around in Europe...)

Salsa is a division of Quality Bicycle Products (QBP) which is headquartered in Minnesota. See: https://www.salsacycles.com/rims.html Why would you need to bring them back from Germany?
