Pre-bankruptcy GT MTB frame

A friend of mine recently discovered a head tube crack on his GT MTB. It is about a 98-00 model, aluminum frame, 1" threaded headset, Altus-Acera parts, and canti brakes (definetly middle/lower end bike). I am swapping the parts to a nice, older steel frame for him. Does anyone know if there is a frame warranty in effect? Our local dealer quit dealing GT after the bankruptcy. I would email Pacific Bikes, but the "contact us" button is inoperable.

even if a warranty is honored, would you want a new Hell-Mart GT?

My brother in law had a GT I-Drive from around 1999 or 2000, he was told after the bankruptcy he was SOL regarding the frame warranty. That may have been during the year or two right after the bankruptcy that there didn't seem to be a GT brand at all, though-

Frame Warranties are typically considered "For the Lifetime of the frame."

This varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Last I checked this was typically considered 5 years from the date of sale when it came to GT Bikes.

This is an important thing to consider when it comes to modern frames. "Lifetime warranty" does not mean "Till you die." Don't get pissed, this is true of prettymuch any liffetime warranty. And unfortunately, it is a bizzare combination of the bike shop and the vendor interaction that determines what will be warranted.

But I'm willing to bet a frame 7+ years old, unless it looks BRAND new, will not be replaced by MFG.

To the "Hell-mart" post... GT maintains a real bike shop line. They are as good as any Specialized, Trek, Haro/Masi/DelSol, Raleigh, you get the idea.

It does look like brand new, it has only been used on rail trails and bike paths, however it normally tows a kid trailer. He didn't even think the frame would have a warranty period, I told him I would at least ask. There is no expectation, just curious if it was worth pursuing.
