2x9 drivetrain
 

I'm working on a build and I was wondering what the downsides are to putting a front deraileur thats designed for a 3x9 drivetrain on a bike with a 2x9 drivetrain. I'm planning on using the Shimano Hone. also, shifters?

It won't shift as well. Why not just use the right one?

Are you running pretty small rings, i.e. big ring of 44-46 and small ring of 29-30? If so, you'll probably get better shifting with a MTB triple FD. I have a touring bike with 44x29. Initially I used a road double FD and it worked OK but the curvature didn't match and shifting was a bit slow. My MTB is now all apart for some work so I took its Deore LX FD and tried it on my tourer and it works better.

Not going to work so well on frames with braze-on type front derailleurs as so many road bikes are these days. The hanger won't alloy the derailleur to go low enough. Not a problem on for clamp-on FD's.

yep, for dj. im putting on a crank that is eithor 24/36/bash guard or 22/32/bash guard. and can anyone tell me about a derailur and shifter for 2 in the front?

Just use a triple derailleur an turn in the screws. If it has the range for 3 it'll have the range for 2.

You may need a longer 4mm limit screw on the high adjustment. A good time to replace the crap screws with socket heads so you can use a hex key. I also replace the spring tension screws on V-Brakes with socket heads.

Last chance, bud. What do you want to know? What type of shifter are you talking about? What dérailleur are you using? If it's for a purchase, what are your criteria?

you dont have to do anything for the shifter, just set it and the front der. to shift the 1 and 2 position rings - once you limit out where a third (biggest) ring would be with the limit screws you wont be able to shift the shifter past the "2" setting, the "3" setting is just unused

Another possibility is to get a triple crankset, and use a bashguard that's compatible with that. Here's one at Pricepoint, there are others out there that are specified as three-ring compatible as well:
