Mega Exo Triple to Compact

Anyone ever had any trouble with the non-drive crank to bearing cup clearance after switching cranks from a triple to compact? I wanted to switch from an FSA Gossamer Triple to an FSA Energy Compact. Took it to my LBS, whose owner is a super-experienced, well-respected bike wrench, and after installing it, the spindle did not come through the BB with enough clearance on the non-drive side to properly install the ND crank arm (about 1/8 - 1/4" too short).

Contacted FSA, FSA says the spindle should measure 108mm, checked it, it does. All spacers are out, bike has 68mm BB shell. FSA says the Mega Exo BB is compatible with either the Compact or the Triple.

Any similar experiences/ideas?
