campy record derailer problem

I received a new bike and assembled it myself. It is a Motobecane with a campy record group. The chain will not shift onto the large freewheel sprocket. It starts on, then slips off. The chain is on the small front chain ring sprocket when I try this. The adjusting screws are at their limit and I am beginning to think that there is a problem whith the frame. Is this possible? Any suggestions?

What size is the cassette you are trying to shift up to? Have you tried turning the B-tension screw in (not the limiter screws, the one that backs the top pulley away from the cassette)?

Can you physically push the der up there with your hand when you are pedaling the bike in the stand?

Are all the housings seated? Did you cut the housing that runs from the chain stay to the der? Campagnolo ders like this housing to be longer than Shimano ders do.

The cassette is 12 -25, the B screw is in all the way. On your suggestion, I pushed the upper roller in -while pedaling the bike in the stand and the chain did shift up but it slipped back as soon as I released the cage.

I don't know what you mean about cutting the housing. The bike came with the rear der installed so I did not see that part of the installation.

Thanks for the help.

sounds like you need some more cable tension. It is possible that you have a bent derailleur hanger, though. It's not always possible to eyeball it, but you can try. Look from behind and see if everything appears in alignment.

As mentioned by another poster, not enough cable tension.

I gave up and took it to my LBS. Turns out there are a lot of issues with this bike - i.e. brakes, rims, bars - luckily they are Campy specialists. They should be able to straighten things out, I hope.
