Change Trek Madone 5.2 SL from triple to compact

Anyone know what's involved in changing a Trek Madone 5.2 SL Triple to a Compact? I'm getting different responses from different sources. Is it as simple as just changing the crank and making some adjustments or do more components need to be swapped?

Crank, BB, left shifter, maybe FD, chain may need to be shortened. This is an expensive "upgrade". What are you trying to accomplish?

New bottom bracket, new front deraileur, maybe even a new rear. Not sure about needing a new STI front shifter. Too much money for me.

STI front shifters are double or triple specific. Why the need for a rear derailleur?
