quick question: valve stems + aero rims
I just received my wheelset from coloradocyclist.com. They use Mavic CXP-33 hoops which have an aero shape to them. Is it still recommended to use the valve stem retaining nut with this type of rim shape? I've seen some with and some without.
Thanks,
Bob

The stem nut is always optional. Using one on an aero rim really looks lame.

I don't use them on my personal bikes.
I put them on customer bikes because they come with the tube and I'd rather avoid an argument about why or why not.

They're entirely optional. I usually put them on when first inflating/installing the tube, and then take them off once there's enough air to hold the valve out via pressure (i.e. when just topping off).
Make sure that your valve stems are long enough to get your tire pump to grip the stem. Your rims don't look super deep, but it may depend a little on what pump you're using too. Tubes come with a few different lengths of valves, or you can buy a valve extender which can be re-used from tube to tube.

+1 Actually, I leave them on my box sections rims but do take them off my aero rims.

I never use them on any rim including the two sets of wheel with CXP-33 rims I have.

I don't put them on any of my rims. I tore half a dozen tubes at the stem before I stopped using them. Haven't torn one since.

I use the stem nuts just because it makes it easier to get the pump head on. Other than that, they're not needed. And they do look weird on aero rims, and even weirder on OCR rims.
