gear ratios and chain wheels

does 39/14 ride and feel the same as 53/19 with 700c wheels?

53/19 is marginally taller than 39/14 but I doubt if many people could detect the difference. The only thing I would look at is the difference in chain line. 53/19 might have a better line, so there would be less noise and friction. Still, it's pretty subtle.

If you can tell 0.135% difference! I don't think Lance would even fess up to that.
Wheel size really doesn't matter.
Speaking of additional insignificant thoughts, which has more friction? Smaller diameter "gears" that cause the chain to flex more, but use fewer teeth or....
I think soma5 pretty much hit it on the head with chain line differences.

Larger chainrings and cogs have slightly less friction than the same ratio with a smaller ring and cog, due as you mentioned, to less severe chain flex. However, as also noted, the differences are miniscule.

Theres a thread on the track forum right now about this subject. Some claim there is absolutely a difference between the same gear ratio using different sized chainrings and cogs. I'm calling BS on it, but worth a read.

Smaller cogs require larger chain tension to operate and larger angles at which links turn. In effect, losses are larger for same gear ratios and smaller cogs.
