Maintaining shades
Dumb question: what is the best way to clean sunglasses after a sweaty/muddy ride? Do-s? Don't-s?
Is it okay to use some sort of soap if a paper towel doesn't do the job? I have just spoiled myself and bought nice Oakley shades (Straight Jacket, jet black); these will have to last for a long, long time. |
Use the oakley bag if it came with one if not buy one for minor cleanings and for major i would just rinse them off under the sink with warm water and dry them with a soft towel.

Thanks for your reply, djbowen1! I will try to remember to take the baggie with me on my pedalling excursions. It is reassuring that shades are water proof, when needed.

I have been maintaining mine that way for years, i have the e-wire ones that are now scratched beyond repair, time for a new pair.

what djbowen1 said is probably acurate, if you have to use soap use something very mild. generally expensive glasses will come with cleaning instructions, if yours didnt you may want to check there website and see if they have some there :)

im kind of bored at work right now so here you go :)
http://www.oakley.com/help/faq/ a quote from there FAQ's: 3. CAN OAKLEY LENSES BE BUFFED? The Iridium coated lenses should be treated with special care. When not wearing your Oakley glasses they should be stored in the Micro Bag received with your glasses. Use only the Micro Bag to clean the lenses. If you need to use a cleaning solution, use a mild soap with warm water, do not use any solvents or chemicals. The Micro Bag consists of extremely fine fibrous threads tightly woven together. The actual thread substance and construction method are of a sponge-like quality that lifts grease, moisture and dirt from the lenses. The Micro Bag is machine washable and should be kept clean. they never tell you what they mean by mild detergent, but at a guess i'd say dawn would work, but maybe someone who knows for sure can enlighten us :) |
Most soaps are probably a bad idea, they should never get that bad where a good stream of warm water wont take care of it.
|
Cheers, shaharidan, for sorting that out for me. I consulted the Oakley FAQ before posting, but did not look at the 'can ... be buffed' section, not knowing what 'to buff' is.
|
well if your interested :)
in this case buff means rub with a cloth. usually you buff things to shine them up like when you wax a car or a floor. the question should have been how should i clean my glasses. especially since there is an international market for them. very slow day :) |
