*&!#!%*Loctite

Is there any way to loosen Loctite? I've got Loctite-laced bolt stuck in the brake boss of a front suspension fork and can't get it to turn (the bolt is stuck in a threaded receptacle that screws into the brake collar on the fork arm, and they came out of the fork arm together). Likewise, the female bolt on an adjustable stem is stuck.

If you had bothered with doing a web search you would have found this: https://www.btc-bci.com/~billben/loctite.htm

Thanks for the link. I did bother doing a Web search, but didn't find what I was looking for right away and wanted to express myself anyway. And I figured it wouldn't hurt to hear from other bikers too.
As for the recommended solution in that link, I wonder how far the new Loctite will penetrate? The bolt it is on is inserted into a threaded receptacle.

Well, you can try the new loctite since it won't hurt anything. The classic solution is to heat the bolt with a torch to about 400F (for red loctite) which will break the glue bond.

As much as I like to encourage people to search the forum before they post their question, ... um ... could you have phrased/presented this a little differently?

There are two basic types of Loctite. One loosens by heating. The other loosens by shock/shattering.

You can start by heating. That usually works with all Loctite. The other way is to whack the bolt head with a hammer. That can shatter the Loctite and allow it to loosen.

It's a little late now but remember there are lots of grades of Loctite and color isn't a certain method of determining which you have. For example there are at least four different grades that are "red" and four "green" all of which have different strengths and usages. You need to use the correct grade number.

The most common grades for bicycle use are 222 (Purple) which is relatively weak and can be used on small (<6 mm) bolts and 242 (Blue), which is also relatively weak, for use larger bolts. Both of these are considered "fully removable".

You need to tell us WHICH loctite was used. If you know.

As far as the brake boss goes, it sounds like you are having trouble holding the boss to get a good purchase on the brake bolt. In the past I have taken the threaded boss and placed it in the bench vise with a axle vise or soft jaws. Then you can get a good purchase to undo the bolt. I would avoid heat if possible because of paint/suspension parts etc.

Bingo! -- It was blue Loctite. I took the boss to my LBS, to see if I could just buy a new one. They didn't have one in stock, but put mine in a vise and grabbed the bolt with a big pair of vise grips (the allen head on the bolt was stripped) and broke it free. They tossed in a new bolt and didn't charge me anything for the work, so I bought a pair of brake pads as a token of appreciation.
